With the past two Sundays cancelled by too much and too little wind it was good to get out there. The forecast of F4 increasing to F6 attracted only 6 boats to start the long beat to Balls Lake. Moby led the closely packed fleet for most of the race with a short spell up front by Super Chuck. The gusty reaches saw all but one leave the kites in their bags with Talula being the one and and the inevitable swim. On the final run of the second lap, the threatening Mazoe, gained 2nd spot just as the welcomed shortened course was signaled and the forecast becoming fact.

With hardly a breath we had another race to forget, another victim of the late burst of summer. Ten minutes after the start most boats hadn't started or had drifted further back due to the tide. After an agonising 90 minutes, it was shortened at a mark with the tactics of White Knuckles earning them first place. White Heat crept over line in second ahead of the early leader Moby, climbing back after tangling with race marks and moored boats.

The Autumn series kicked off in warm glorious sunshine but after last weeks casualty from the high pressure, today there was wind if only a F3-4 at best. Scheduled as the Bar Buoy race it wasn't practical to exit the harbour so a course to Nat West passing Brownsea Castle and back proved a good option. Early leaders, Mike Arrow and James Stafford in White Knuckles failed to recognise the channel markers and were left making the numbers up. Moby, familiar with the course took up the running gaining a lead that remained unchallenged. Talula good for second place covered well to secure runners up ahead of Super Chuck.

LATE SUMMER SERIES (Evenings)
Thurs
11 Sep
A fine evening with a F4-5 for the last race of the season. 13 GP14s lined up for the long beat to Balls Lake with The Big Floater taking the lead. To win the series they needed first place with Talula no better than third but after the first lap the rival was holding a second. Serious tactics were called for and who better to perform the deed than the crack Rainback team of Colin and son Matthew. With scenes more akin to match racing they peeled off, sailed Talula down,  White Knuckles came through and with perfect timing it was job done. Clever stuff !!

After a windy weekend only a feeble trickle of a southwesterly for the final Monday of the season. 13 GP14s turned out with the boats at the pin end advantaged as the breeze backed and filled from the port side albeit short lived with Moondust leading at Balls lake. If the reach to RBX was slow enough the final drift to the line of the one lap race was painful. Not quite so for White Heat, working hard they beat Moondust with Moby taking third.

Although dull and overcast with only force 2 breezes the race officer managed a two lap race for the 12 GP14s before darkness. Early running had Talula calling the tune until the fourth leg where the first three boats lost out to a significant windshift lifting the chasing pack on to the mark. Talula, now well out of it tacked over but Reflection, established as leaders had only to hold everyone off. Still covering, on the penultimate leg it should have been sewn up but Talula now back in the frame had boat speed and crept in to steal it. Third place went to Calypso with Tony Moore and stepson Piers aged eight in their first race together. Well done guys (and yes they flew their spinnaker!)

At the end of a wet, dreary Bank Holiday Monday the sun finally appeared but only 7 GP14s tested the gusty F5. The long beat to Balls lake had Shaken not Stirred leading ahead of Talula with Mike Williams teaming up with James Stafford. Once the Spinnakers were up Talula slid past and gained a lead which they held to the finish. Out of Control behind these two, managed to climb to second ahead of White Knuckles recovering from their poor first beat.

14 GP14s were welcomed by a fine evening and light to moderate breezes although somewhat blustery at the start. The pin end was the place to be to get out of the strong ebb tide with good advantages being taken by The Big Floater, Moby and Super Chuck. These three led the pack for the first lap but never write off, Mike & Maggs in Talula especially with a decreasing breeze. Recovering from an unconvincing start they climbed to challenge Colin Rainback in The Big Floater on the final run. The Floater covered well but Moby choosing to broad reach the windier starboard side, arrived level at the final mark and the calls of water from Rainback were not enough as Moby's speed had them rounding with just the short fetch to the line to claim first. Good stuff ....

A taste of summer at last, not quite a shorts job but don't knock it. 12 GP14s started in a F3-4 the beat to Latch with few choosing the favoured port end. With Matt Burge out in The Big Floater the fleet were surprised to see them trail Talula and Reflection for most of the race. As the wind decreased Matt not settling for third chose alternate tactics on the reach as Talula covered Reflection. At the mark, Matt and his scratch crew crept in and held it with the final result reversing the top three... How does he do it ?

A fine evening, a F3-4 and dream start for Matt & Serina in Chuckie but as the wind went down the lightweights came up with a final result of Talula in first and a good result of second for for Reflection ahead of Shaken not stirred.  Hey Matt, tell Serina she'll  have to lose some weight.

Sunshine, blue sky, not blowing force 6 – oh yes I remember, summer! A tricky combination of the long, angled, blue start line and a just-turned tide meant many boats opted for the middle of the line, leaving Anne and Serina in Reflection to benefit from the wide open spaces at the hut end. This proved to be a bit of a flyer, with Reflection crossing in front of most of the fleet and establishing a lead by the first mark, which was held for most of the race (more of that later). It was particularly nice to welcome back David and Celia in Flying Fish II for their first appearance of the season (well there are 5 weeks left…). Anyway, back at the front of the fleet, Reflection had been holding off a determined challenge from Ian and Ted in Shaken not Stirred, and of course Colin and Andy in The Big Floater. However, the crack team doesn’t give up their crown that easily, and on the last leg they finally got close enough to put a move on Reflection, rounding the last mark in front. Meanies…

A low water course of a couple of times up and down the channel saw the Big Floater lead the 12 GP14s start to finish. Chuckie almost caught them when they failed to cover but the lessons learnt kept them at bay. With these two pulling away the battle for third went to White Knuckles ahead of another fight between Reflection & Shaken not Stirred with the latter taking it. The force 5 took some capsizes and retirements, amongst them Talula the second favourite.

Prior to launching it was a sunny, hot evening with a light easterly and definitely shorts weather. How it changed, in minutes it became a dreary, windy, force 5 from the South and then it rained. The 12 GP14s that started at a crowded pin end had a course turned on it's head especially went the wind ended up West. Moby led ahead of Super Chuck for two legs but the brave boats behind with their kites soon screamed past the leaders who chose the safer option with Reflection being one of the casualties and forced to retire. With the wind easing a tad, kites became the norm but the Big Floaters lead had it sewn up with Talula climbing to 2nd and Moby hanging on for third. At the line White Knuckles (OCS at the start) recovered well to finish 4th by taking out three boats on the final reach.

A warm evening and a F5 to add to the fun with 13 GPs on the start line. For some the conditions and capsizes were too much with only 9 finishers. White Knuckles soon took up the running, with the kite at every opportunity increasing their lead. Moby challenged early on but settled for holding off Mazoe coming close at times. The final run saw the spinnaker of Anne & Serina (Reflection) pay off as Mazoe chose to goose wing but not enough and claimed  third.

An uninviting summers evening and a F4-5 for the 13 GP14s with a race of well over 2 hours where The Big Floater led start to finish. Surprisingly the gap didn't grow as the race went on, probably helped by being pinned on a buoy for minutes (even the best get it wrong sometimes). Calypso put up a good fight to catch them but settled for second ahead of Talula who eventually caught Anne & Barry in Reflection in the final stages.

After a fortnight of heavy winds, it was nice to get back to a gentle F3-4. Eleven GP14s started a long beat with The Big Floater leading from the off. White Heat looked good until doomed with mutterings of "I thought you put the bung in darling!". Talula then took up the fight, tacked off down the channel uncovered to reap the rewards of a lead too big for the Floater. Lap three and the tactics of Moby on the final triangle paid off to earn them a third.

Light winds of F2-3 and decreasing but a pleasant sail. 12 GP14s started the one sided beat to Arne with White Heat's decision to tack on the gun proving fruitful. Once into clear air the Brann's were the ones to catch. Talula true to form were soon challenging but two laps later they were still being held off reversing the result from the previous day's Bournemouth Pier Trophy race. White Knuckles probably third favourite were par for the course.

Another beautiful evening but a tad light on the F2-3, forecast to drop for the 11 GPs and it did. The bunched up favoured pin end of the start took it's toll with individual recalls but the hut enders sailed free with no disadvantage. Despite the long beats, the racing stayed close with the lead changing throughout. The second beat saw Moby leave the pack in 4th place, sail down the harbour against the tide, popping up first at the windward mark but with a predator in the shape of Mike & Maggs, in these conditions, positions were to be reversed with The Brann's in White Heat threatening but finishing third.

In a challenging SW F5-6, when even the Ospreys didn’t bother, eight(!) GP’s happily took to the water, undeterred even by the prospect of a dodgy gybe mark at Picadilly. The top three were those who managed to maintain sailing the right way up, with even the Big Floater swapping a comfortable 3 minute lead for a muddy mainsail in the gusts near Picadilly. Chasing boats Shaken not Stirred and Reflection took advantage and were neck and neck down the last reach, but Anne and Serina managed to nick in front before Cakes mark to take the win from Ian and Ted. Martin and Greg in Moondust managed to hold off the fast-gaining Calypso (Tony and Barry) to take third. It was a girly wind though…

A fine evening but the fickle breeze must have deterred some not to bother as only 10 GPs launched to race. After a postponement the bunched pin end with the tide caused a few to be OCS and restart including Talula. The well chosen small course kept the boats together with White Knuckles and Moby up front. As the wind decreased further, somehow Talula kept going, picking boats off one by one to win convincingly at a shortened mark. White Knuckles came in 2nd ahead of a good performance from Ian & Ted in Shaken not Stirred.

The fetch to the first mark had those who started at the extreme ends getting it wrong. The Big Floater judged it perfectly, cruising to the mark to lead the 14 GPs throughout. The F2 northerly shifting about, eventually veered on the final lap to make the second reach a beat with the leader covering White Knuckles tack for tack. With only these two in contention the fight for third was won by Calypso.

The day following the Southern Championship weekend saw 12 GP14s line up on a pleasant evening in a F2-3. The first part of the course of two triangles with a one sided beat proved fairly processional but the remainder up and down the channel needed good tactics and sorted them. Anne & Richard in Reflection were amongst those who got it right but not quite enough and settled for second place behind Talula, holding Andy & Sue in Moby, off to third.

14 GP14s probably enjoyed the best sailing this season so far, especially first lap as the steady Force 4 gave comfortable planing reaches. As the heavens opened Colin & Andy in the Big Floater, unperturbed became the ones to catch and White Knuckles came close to it but the favourites covered well to win this the first race in the new series. Tony & Richard returned some form with a third ahead of Talula, recovering from their poor start.

Bank Holiday Monday, gales in the morning but it cleared up to pleasant evening but only 8 GPs were tempted. With the wind between F3 and F5 it looked inviting but away from the sheltered waters, not quite so. The shifts and gusts made an unpleasant beat with two boats retiring, expecting the worst. With White Knuckles OCS at the start the remaining boats sailed one full lap with a couple of  capsizes. First to finish were Andy & Sue in Moby, too strong for Talula who came second with one of the capsizes Ian & Ted coming third.

Typical, nice F4 all day, get to the club, and it's F1-2 falling and raining, anyway 15 GPs got away in the tide with Ian & Ted (Shaken not Stirred) ahead of The Big Floater. After the two reaches with only one lap in prospect , the leader looked good to hold it. Rounding the final mark and covering should have been a formality but cracking off allowed the favourites to sail higher and nick it on the line. Third spot deservedly went to Colin Byrne beating top opposition.

The 13 Gp14s were expecting a F4 but at times the Force 3 was only just enough to combat the tide. The Big Floater, at the hut end to avoid the tide, soon took up their usual spot in front of Talula but at the mark the boats from the pin end sailing with more wind, joined in. The processional reaches caused few upsets but back on the long beat against the tide the tactics came to play and Moby played it best, claiming their  first win of the season.

The feeble breeze gave the race officer concerns but the decision to go was good as it stayed at 5 knots all night giving the 14 GPs two laps. Colin & Andy continued their form with Mike & Maggs close early on but 2nd at the end. The course of windward leeward's proved good for the northerly, giving ample opportunity for changes down the fleet and changes there were due to the shifts and pockets of wind. Tony & Richard fought off the fleet to earn 3rd but only just ahead of a converging pack led by Barry & Taras (in Moby) appearing from nowhere.

This is more like it, a beautiful sunny evening for the 14 GPs but only a F2 forecasted to drop. Den & Clyde took advantage of their good start but lost out to the favourites at the second mark. Talula took the running as The Big Floater fell back. An hour later with hardly a trickle, the Race was shortened with most of the fleet bunched within a stones throw of the finish with the final result taking forever, That's sailing!  paddles out, back to the bar for the best bit.

The strong ebb tide had boats over at the start but 15 GPs got away at the second attempt in mainly F4 sunny conditions. The low water channel course gave little opportunity for change and with no beats the 2 hour race became processional. Colin and Andy made a good start and held off, the Macgregor's and then the Williams's despite good challenges. The wind eventually went down with some mid fleet boats, approaching the finish against the tide, losing out.
