What is a GP14 ?
The GP14 is a versatile 14 ft (4.27m) long, two person sailing dinghy built in
either wood or plastic. Designed by Jack Holt, one of Britain's foremost
dinghy designers, the GP14 is suitable for competitive racing, training and
general activities. New boats are available with self draining cockpits for
easier handling after a capsize. It is also possible for the amateur to
build his own boat. With full racing rig of mainsail, genoa and spinnaker
it can be an exiting racing boat or with main and small jib a comfortable family
dinghy.
The GP14 carries a manageable spinnaker and off wind the boat will normally
plane above a force 3.
What sort of people sail a GP14
A very wide range of people who sail
for enjoyment sail a GP14. It is sailed successfully by people from their
teenage years until late in life and for competitive sailing there is a wide
tolerance of all-up crew weight at the front of the fleet from 20 to 25 stones
(127 to 159 kgs). A midi-genoa allows lighter crews to compete on a par with
stronger crews. The
GP14 International Class Association
The GP14 has an excellent class
association for its owners. The office is staffed at normal office hours
giving a full back up to it's members and offers a most competitive insurance
scheme. Inside this site you will find links to the GP14 Class Association
and others.
